Verona is a
romantic and bright city, ideal to spend a holiday dedicated to
art and culture. Monuments, churches and musuems are all at arms length
and within a few minutes walking distance.
A city of ancient origins, Verona held much importance in the Roman
Empire, during the medieval era and as a military stronghold in the
Austrian Empire; all these historic periods have left a strong reminder in
the form of monuments, churches, buildings and the tourist who looks
around can recognise all of these eras.
As well as the famous Arena and the
Roman Theatre , while walking
through this splendid city you can admire and visit unique, evocative
places such as Piazza Brà and Piazza delle Erbe, the
Cathedral ,
Casa di Giulietta ,
Castelvecchio and many other
extremely interesting buildings.
Having dedicated some days to discovering the city, you can have the
possibility of extending you stay in our hotel in Verona to explore
the immense variety of surrounding areas: Lake Garda with its
gracious and picturisque villages and la Valpolicella, famous for
its fine wines such as Amarone and Recioto.
The strategic position of Verona allows its use as a base for daily
excursions (by train, bus or car) to extremely interesting cities, from an
artistic point of view, such as Mantova (38 km), Vicenza (50
km), Padova (80 km) and Venice (100 km).
Verona's surrondings also offer many enjoyable occasions from the smallest
to biggest: Gardaland park, the Zoo Safari and Caneva World. Not to
be missed, Valeggio sul Mincio resort, the vast garden of Villa Sigurtà.

The Romans built the Amphitheatre outside Verona's first circle of city
walls in the first part of the 1st century AD. It hosted games where
gladiators would fight each other or wild animals before a vast public
that came from all over the territory. The Arena held around 30,000
spectators and had four main entrances, corresponding to its two axes.
The facade, of which there is still a small section (the so-called "Ala"
or "Wing"), was entirely built in large blocks of white and pink limestone
from nearby Valpolicella. In the Middle Ages, stones from the Arena were
taken for use on other buildings. Later, it resumed its role as a site for
shows and events: a role it continues to play today for the annual summer
opera season, which began in 1913.
Since the Renaissance, there have been numerous large restoration
projects, leading to the gradual reintegration of the tiered seating
inside. For some years, a large-scale project has been in progress to
ensure the preservation and dignity of the Arena.
